Join us as we enter into Advent at St. John’s. The four weeks of Advent prepare us for Christmas, but also for the year to come. Scriptures of the season are rich with message, of longing, expectation, and hope. Here are some of the ways you can begin the Advent Journey:
An Advent Devotional Calendar is available here: 2015 Advent Calendar
Each day, read the suggested scripture lesson and reflect on how you can carry out the suggested devotion.
Daily Advent Email Meditations: Our rector, Tom Mousin, will be sending out a brief daily meditation by email based on the Advent Calendars. If you wish to receive these daily devotions, send an email to: rector@stjohns02129.org and simply write “yes” as a message.
Advent Wreath Making: On Sunday, November 29th after the 10 am service, we will provide materials for you to make Advent wreaths for home. Fresh greens from Vermont will be there in abundance. If you have a wreath ring candleholder from previous seasons, please bring it along with you.
An Advent Devotional Book: Light Upon Light: A Literary Guide to Prayer for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, Compiled by Sarah Arthur
Join others from St. John’s in using this book as a guide for Advent. For each week of Advent, there are suggested scripture readings, a suggested format for prayer, and an array of short selected pieces of literature – poems, essays, and segments of stories. Some are from classic pieces of literature, and others are contemporary. We invite you to use this book at home. And on Tuesday, December 15, you are invited to gather at church at 7 for an evening we are calling Honoring Advent. It will be a chance to reflect on how we are observing the season. Those of us using this book can share, but the evening is a time for all of us to talk about keeping the season in the midst of the world’s rush to Christmas. More information will soon be available on the church’s website and in News and Notes.
In the meantime, the book is available to order from Amazon. Again, the title and information is: Light Upon Light A Literary Guide to Prayer for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, by Sarah Arthur; Paraclete Press
